Day 2: Find Your Design Direction

Day 2: Find Your Design Direction: image 1 from Your Design Guide by Jill Seidner Interior Design

Yesterday was about looking at your room as it is.

Today is about looking outward.

Not to shop.

To notice.

Because one of the easiest ways to make a room feel scattered is to start choosing things one at a time without a clear direction.

A chair you like.

A lamp you saw online.

A rug that was on sale.

A paint color someone else used.

Individually, they may all be great.

Together, they may have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

So today we’re creating the visual direction for your Entry + Living Room before we make any design decisions.

You do not need to know your official “design style.”

You do not need to decide whether you’re traditional, modern, transitional, coastal, eclectic or anything else.

I care much more about what you keep responding to.

The same wood tones.

The same kind of lighting.

The same wall colors.

The same mix of old and new.

The same types of rooms over and over again.

That is where your direction starts.

Today, we’re looking for patterns

Pull together rooms you genuinely like.

Pinterest is perfect for this, but screenshots, magazines, saved Instagram images and old design photos work too.

Try not to overthink your choices.

Save the room because something about it catches you.

Then go back and look at everything together.

You’ll usually start seeing repetition.

Maybe almost every room has warm white walls.

Maybe you keep saving dark wood furniture.

Maybe you like oversized art instead of gallery walls.

Maybe you’re drawn to color, but only in small doses.

Maybe every room has a mix of vintage pieces with something clean and modern.

Those little repetitions are much more useful than trying to force yourself into a style category.

Your Room Redesign Roadmap

Yesterday we analyzed the room.

Today we’re defining the direction.

Next we’ll shop your own home, measure, create the furniture layout, work through color, lighting, rugs, art, styling and eventually create a final shopping list.

The order matters.

We are building the room one decision at a time instead of decorating by accident.
